Dustin described himself as a skilled outdoorsman rather than a survival expert. Solo journeys from Montana to Alaska had encouraged him to reduce dependence on modern equipment. He left his wife and two dogs at home.

Dustin left after eight days. Persistent wetness, trouble establishing reliable fire and a major storm created a different problem from a self-planned wilderness trip. His departure helped define the first season’s difficult opening phase.
